Galatians 3:1-20

Galatians 3:1-20 (Good News Translation)  1You foolish Galatians! Who put a spell on you? Before your very eyes you had a clear description of the death of Jesus Christ on the cross!           2Tell me this one thing: did you receive God's Spirit by doing what the Law requires or by hearing the gospel and believing it?           3How can you be so foolish! You began by God's Spirit; do you now want to finish by your own power?           4Did all your experience mean nothing at all? Surely it meant something!           5Does God give you the Spirit and work miracles among you because you do what the Law requires or because you hear the gospel and believe it?           6Consider the experience of Abraham; as the scripture says,          "He believed God, and because of his faith God accepted him as righteous."           7You should realize, then, that the real descendants of Abraham are the people who have faith.           8The scripture predicted that God would pu

Matthew 22:15-46 (Good News Translation) 15The Pharisees went off and made a plan to trap Jesus with questions.           16Then they sent to him some of their disciples and some members of Herod's party.          "Teacher," they said,          we know that you tell the truth. You teach the truth about God's will for people, without worrying about what others think, because you pay no attention to anyone's status.           17Tell us, then, what do you think? Is it against our Law to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor, or not?           18Jesus, however, was aware of their evil plan, and so he said,          You hypocrites! Why are you trying to trap me?           19Show me the coin for paying the tax!          They brought him the coin,           20and he asked them,          "Whose face and name are these?"           21"The Emperor's," they answered.          So Jesus said to them,          "Well, th

Acts 12:1-19

Acts 12:1-19 (Good News Translation) 1About this time King Herod           began to persecute some members of the church.           2He had James, the brother of John, put to death by the sword.           3When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he went ahead and had Peter arrested. (This happened during the time of the Festival of Unleavened Bread.)           4After his arrest Peter was put in jail, where he was handed over to be guarded by four groups of four soldiers each. Herod planned to put him on trial in public after Passover.           5So Peter was kept in jail, but the people of the church were praying earnestly to God for him.           6The night before Herod was going to bring him out to the people, Peter was sleeping between two guards. He was tied with two chains, and there were guards on duty at the prison gate.           7Suddenly an angel of the Lord stood there, and a light shone in the cell. The angel shook Peter by the shoulder, woke him u
