Gap Theory?

Question: "What is the Gap Theory? Did anything happen between Genesis
1:1 and 1:2?"
Answer: Genesis 1:1–2 states, "In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness
was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering
over the waters." The gap theory is the view that God created a fully
functional earth with all animals, including the dinosaurs and other
creatures we know only from the fossil record. Then, the theory goes,
something happened to destroy the earth completely—most likely the
fall of Satan to earth—so that the planet became without form and
void. At this point, God started all over again, recreating the earth
in its paradise form as further described in Genesis. The gap theory,
which is distinct from theistic evolution and the day-age theory, is
also called old-earth creationism, gap creationism, and the
ruin-reconstruction theory.
In young-earth creationism, Genesi...

Jesus Again Tells about His Death
As Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he took his twelve disciples
aside and told them in private:
We are now on our way to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be
handed over to the chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses.
They will sentence him to death, and then they will hand him over to
foreigners who will make fun of him. They will beat him and nail him
to a cross. But on the third day he will rise from death.
A Mother's Request
The mother of James and John came to Jesus with her two sons. She
knelt down and started begging him to do something for her. Jesus
asked her what she wanted, and she said, "When you come into your
kingdom, please let one of my sons sit at your right side and the
other at your left." Jesus answered, "Not one of you knows what you
are asking. Are you able to drink from the cup that I must soon drink
from?"
James and John said, "Yes, we are!...

Jacob said to Laban, "The time is up, and I want to marry Rachel now!"
So Laban gave a big feast and invited all their neighbors. But that
evening he brought Leah to Jacob, who married her and spent the night
with her. Laban also gave Zilpah to Leah as her servant woman. The
next morning Jacob found out that he had married Leah, and he asked
Laban, "Why did you do this to me? Didn't I work to get Rachel? Why
did you trick me?" Laban replied, "In our country the older daughter
must get married first. After you spend this week with Leah, you may
also marry Rachel. But you will have to work for me another seven
years." - At the end of the week of celebration, Laban let Jacob marry
Rachel, and he gave her his servant woman Bilhah. Jacob loved Rachel
more than he did Leah, but he had to work another seven years for
Laban. The Lord knew that Jacob loved Rachel more than he did Leah,
and so he gave children to Leah, but no...

Jesus Is Alive
"On Sunday morning while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the
tomb and saw that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.
She ran to Simon Peter and to Jesus' favorite disciple and said, "They
have taken the Lord from the tomb! We don't know where they have put
him." Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. They ran
side by side, until the other disciple ran faster than Peter and got
there first. He bent over and saw the strips of linen cloth lying
inside the tomb, but he did not go in.
When Simon Peter got there, he went into the tomb and saw the strips
of cloth. He also saw the piece of cloth that had been used to cover
Jesus' face. It was rolled up and in a place by itself. The disciple
who got there first then went into the tomb, and when he saw it, he
believed. At that time Peter and the other disciple did not know that
the Scriptures said Jesus would rise to life. So the two o...

A Hidden Treasure
The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when someone finds a
treasure hidden in a field and buries it again. A person like that is
happy and goes and sells everything in order to buy that field.
A Valuable Pearl
The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when a shop owner is
looking for fine pearls. After finding a very valuable one, the owner
goes and sells everything in order to buy that pearl.
A Fish Net
The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when a net is thrown into a
lake and catches all kinds of fish. When the net is full, it is
dragged to the shore, and the fishermen sit down to separate the fish.
They keep the good ones, but throw the bad ones away. That's how it
will be at the end of time. Angels will come and separate the evil
people from the ones who have done right. Then those evil people will
be thrown into a flaming furnace, where they will cry and grit their
teeth in pain.

Deuteronomy 19:1-13 (Good News Translation)
1 "After the LORD your God has destroyed the people whose land he is
giving you and after you have taken their cities and houses and
settled there, 2-3 divide the territory into three parts, each with a
city that can be easily reached. Then any of you that kill will be
able to escape to one of them for protection. 4 If you accidentally
kill someone who is not your enemy, you may escape to any of these
cities and be safe. 5 For example, if two of you go into the forest
together to cut wood and if, as one of you is chopping down a tree,
the ax head comes off the handle and kills the other, you can run to
one of those three cities and be safe. 6 If there were only one city,
the distance to it might be too great, and the relative who is
responsible for taking revenge for the killing might catch you and
angrily kill an innocent person. After all, it was by accident that
you killed someone who was not your enemy. 7 This is why ...

The Birth of Esau and Jacob
Isaac was the son of Abraham, and he was forty years old when he
married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel. She was also the sister of
Laban, the Aramean from northern Syria. Almost twenty years later,
Rebekah still had no children. So Isaac asked the Lord to let her have
a child, and the Lord answered his prayer. Before Rebekah gave birth,
she knew she was going to have twins, because she could feel them
inside her, fighting each other. She thought, "Why is this happening
to me?" Finally, she asked the Lord why her twins were fighting, and
he told her: "Your two sons will become two separate nations. The
younger of the two will be stronger, and the older son will be his
servant." When Rebekah gave birth, the first baby was covered with
red hair, so he was named Esau. The second baby grabbed on to his
brother's heel, so they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old
when they were born.

A Wonderful Future for God's People
I am sure that what we are suffering now cannot compare with the glory
that will be shown to us. In fact, all creation is eagerly waiting
for God to show who his children are. Meanwhile, creation is
confused, but not because it wants to be confused. God made it this
way in the hope that creation would be set free from decay and would
share in the glorious freedom of his children. We know that all
creation is still groaning and is in pain, like a woman about to give
birth. The Spirit makes us sure about what we will be in the future.
But now we groan silently, while we wait for God to show that we are
his children. This means that our bodies will also be set free. And
this hope is what saves us. But if we already have what we hope for,
there is no need to keep on hoping. However, we hope for something we
have not yet seen, and we patiently wait for it. In certain ways we
are weak, but the Spirit is here to hel...

A Story about a Farmer
"That same day Jesus left the house and went out beside Lake Galilee,
where he sat down to teach. Such large crowds gathered around him
that he had to sit in a boat, while the people stood on the shore.
Then he taught them many things by using stories. He said: A farmer
went out to scatter seed in a field. While the farmer was scattering
the seed, some of it fell along the road and was eaten by birds.
Other seeds fell on thin, rocky ground and quickly started growing
because the soil wasn't very deep. But when the sun came up, the
plants were scorched and dried up, because they did not have enough
roots. Some other seeds fell where thornbushes grew up and choked the
plants. But a few seeds did fall on good ground where the plants
produced a hundred or sixty or thirty times as much as was scattered.
If you have ears, pay attention!

A Tree and Its Fruit
A good tree produces only good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad
fruit. You can tell what a tree is like by the fruit it produces. You
are a bunch of evil snakes, so how can you say anything good? Your
words show what is in your hearts. Good people bring good things out
of their hearts, but evil people bring evil things out of their
hearts. I promise you that on the day of judgment, everyone will have
to account for every careless word they have spoken. On that day they
will be told that they are either innocent or guilty because of the
things they have said.
A Sign from Heaven
Some Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses said, "Teacher, we
want you to show us a sign from heaven." But Jesus replied: You want a
sign because you are evil and won't believe! But the only sign you
will get is the sign of the prophet Jonah. He was in the stomach of a
big fish for three days and nights, just as the Son of Man w...

The Unbelieving Towns
"In the towns where Jesus had worked most of his miracles, the people
refused to turn to God. So Jesus was upset with them and said: You
people of Chorazin are in for trouble! You people of Bethsaida are in
for trouble too! If the miracles that took place in your towns had
happened in Tyre and Sidon, the people there would have turned to God
long ago. They would have dressed in sackcloth and put ashes on their
heads. I tell you that on the day of judgment the people of Tyre and
Sidon will get off easier than you will.
People of Capernaum, do you think you will be honored in heaven? You
will go down to hell! If the miracles that took place in your town had
happened in Sodom, that town would still be standing. So I tell you
that on the day of judgment the people of Sodom will get off easier
than you.

John 10:1-6 (10:1) "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. (2) But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. (3) To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. (4) When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. (5) A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." (6) This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples
Jesus later appeared to his disciples along the shore of Lake
Tiberias. Simon Peter, Thomas the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in
Galilee, and the brothers James and John, were there, together with
two other disciples. Simon Peter said, "I'm going fishing!" The
others said, "We will go with you." They went out in their boat. But
they didn't catch a thing that night. Early the next morning Jesus
stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize who he was.
Jesus shouted, "Friends, have you caught anything?" "No!" they
answered. So he told them, "Let your net down on the right side of
your boat, and you will catch some fish." They did, and the net was so
full of fish that they could not drag it up into the boat. Jesus'
favorite disciple told Peter, "It's the Lord!" When Simon heard that
it was the Lord, he put on the clothes that he had taken off whil...

Revelation 3 (3:1) "And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: 'The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. "'I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. (2) Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. (3) Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. (4) Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. (5) The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. John 3 (3:1) Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. (2) This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him." (3) Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." (4) Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" (5) Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. John 2:1-11 (2:1) On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. (2) Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. (3) When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." (4) And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." (5) His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." (6) Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. (7) Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. (8) And he said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast." So they took it. (9) When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom (10) and sai...
